The offense exploded and the pitching was strong as the Panthers swept a doubleheader at SUNY Broome on Thursday, winning 9-1 and 15-2. TC3 improves to 4-27 overall and 3-16 in the Mid-State Athletic Conference. Broome is 7-21 overall and 3-9 in the MSAC.
Game One: Tompkins Cortland 9, Broome 1
The game was scoreless after two innings, but Tim Leary ripped a one-out double to spark a four-run rally. Broome scored one in the bottom of the third, but the Panthers tacked on with two in the fourth and three more in the sixth.
Nathan Joly was fantastic on the mound, throwing all seven innings, striking out four while allowing just two hits and one unearned run. Keelan Marren led the 11-hit attack by going 3-for-4 with four RBI.
Game Two: Tompkins Cortland 15, Broome 2 (five innings)
The teas traded single runs in the first before the Panthers took advantage of four batters hit by pitch to score five runs in the second – all with two outs. Broome put one more on the board in the bottom of the inning, but the third saw TC3 pound out seven hits and draw four walks, pushing nine across the plate to blow the game open.
Pitching again was impressive in game two, with Jake Malkowski throwing all five innings, striking out five and allowing just one earned run. Easton Podbeusek had a big game at the plate going 4-for-4 with five RBI.
Looking ahead
The Panthers are scheduled to travel to Jamestown Community College on Saturday.
