Last-Minute Goal Gives Panthers Tie on Sophomore Day

TC3 women's soccer team on sophomore day

The Panthers women's soccer team saved the best for last, scoring a goal in the last minute of the game to pull out a dramatic tie with Corning Community College on Sunday. The 1-1 deadlock breaks a ten-game losing streak for the Panthers, dating back to the team's tie with Corning last season. The draw on Sophomore Day leaves TC3 at 0-6-1 overall and 0-4-1 in the Mid-State Athletic Conference. Corning is 4-3-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the MSAC.

The visiting Red Barons came to Dryden having won three of their last four, including the last two games where they combined to score ten goals. The game started with Corning enjoying an advantage in time of possession, but the Panthers defense did a great job limiting quality chances. Corning finally got one past the defense in the 31st minute, scoring on a play off a free kick just outside the box. The 1-0 score held into the half, and almost all of the second half before the TC3 attack came to life in the last minute of the game.

The action that produced the tying goal started with TC3 goalie JuShawna Crane (Cincinnatus/Cincinnatus H.S.) gathering the ball in the box with just over a minute left to play. She played the ball up the field, where it was deflected before Marlee Hogan (Auburn/Auburn H.S.) took control about 10 yards short of midfield. The freshman wasted no time, heading straight up field, crossing midfield and using her speed to beat the Corning defense. She dribbled it to goal, beating the keeper for the tying score with 53.9 seconds left on the clock. Neither team threatened over the final seconds, leaving the teams deadlocked for the second straight year.

Cortney Scutt (Cincinnatus H.S./Cincinnatus) played the first 75 minutes in goal, recording nine saves. Crane had one save over the final 15 minutes.

Looking ahead

The Panthers host Finger Lakes Community College for the final home game of the season on Wednesday.
